Becoming limb: Zines, disability and collective art-making

Becoming limb: Zines, disability and collective art-making

with Jo Tang

Tickets: https://ticketpass.org/event/ERKAXE/becoming-limb-zines-disability-and-collective-art-making

A zine is a self-published work in which the creator explores their personal experiences, feelings, and ideas. Zines have long been used as a medium of self-expression, resistance, and personal storytelling.

The word ‘crip’ is used by some of the disabled community to describe themselves, as a reclamation of the derogatory term, to celebrate disability and engage with it as a political identity. Disability Justice Activist Stacey Park Milbern uses the term ‘crip doulaing’ to describe the ways disabled people offer support to others throughout the experience of being or becoming disabled. Zines can be a form of ‘crip doulaing’, with disabled folks sharing their experiences and offering support and tips on anything from identity to funding.

As a multiply disabled creative, Jo Tang relies on bodies outside of themselves to enable them to access creativity. Whether that be the physical act of pushing their wheelchair around in gallery spaces or even as simple as giving them a lift into university so that they can create art without the further strain on their body and mind.

Through the act of collaborative making, Jo hopes to create a space where discussions on accessibility, creativity, and disability can be explored through community - whether that includes disability or not. Using zines as a medium to express what was discussed and further personal feelings surrounding the topics.

Additionally, this workshop will support Jo's dissertation where they aim to use zines to illustrate their struggles with accessing art and the importance of community, especially when living with disability. Come along and become Jo's hands, become an extension of their body-self and support a disabled creative’s work, whilst in turn, exploring what creativity and community means to you in the wider lens of access, crip theory, and queer theory.

Workshop facilitator

Jo is a disabled and neurodivergent creative, using multimedia formats to explore and express their identity, foster awareness, and form meaningful connections.

Living with autism, ADHD, and complex chronic illnesses, Jo uses their social media pages for awareness and advocacy, as well as exploring these parts of their identity in their artistic practices.

They have worked with brands like Cool Crutches, By Acre, and Visible to normalise and reduce stigma in the use of mobility aids in young disabled people. They are currently studying Fashion Styling and Art Direction at University and working on a project exploring disability through fashion.

Location

Due to the access restrictions at The Convivial's homebase, we have booked St Gluvias Community Hall in Penryn. By foot, its address is 48 West Street, Penryn TR10 8ER. Approached from town centre, the entrance is on the right down the path just after no.46. The path leads down via steep steps to the main entrance door.

For wheelchair access, the hall is accessible via Calver Close. Turn into Calver Close and follow the road down to the bottom where it opens out. The Hall is on the right. There is very limited parking (spaces H5-H10 (the hatched area) only. [The spaces H1-H4 are privately leased and are never available to hall users]. You must display a parking permit or risk a Penalty Charge Notice. Please get in touch with Jo at presentedbyjo@gmail.com if you require a permit during the session.
