The Convivial is heading into a new phase in September, with Sophie taking a leave of absence to undertake some study training in Devon for three months, and a new collective under formation to lead The Convivial into a new era of collective learning, care and love for place. And we want to CELEBRATE… all that has gone before, and all to come.

Come to The Convivial and mark a moment of transition while celebrating Summer's last rays. After a gorgeous first session at The Convivial, Herbie Hopkins returns with an evening of magical music, poetry, and dance in the Penryn woods (weather permitting) to mark this moment of transition for all — featuring performances by a variety of artists from across Cornwall, all exalting the expressive freedom of improvisation!

What to expect

  • 6 - 6.15pm: Gather at The Convivial

  • 6.15pm: Walk into the woods

  • 6.30pm: First performance

  • 6.50pm: The times are hard; why be convivial? Reflections & gratitude from Sophie

  • 7pm: Second performance

  • 7.30pm: Potluck dinner sharing

  • 8pm: Third performance

  • 8.40pm: Soft close (stay and chat as long as you like!)

What to bring

  • Decent footware

  • Something to add to the potluck dinner

  • A bowl and fork

  • Something to sit on

  • Warm clothes

  • A torch

*If the weather is untenable we will be in The Convivial’s main space!

Tickets

We have 25 tickets available for this evening (limited due to potentially needing to be within The Convivial if weather is not amenable to being outside - if we are outside then there will be more available on the ‘door’.) Tickets are at a donation cost (pay what you feel), with all proceeds going to the artists. Suggested donations - £5-20.

Herbie Hopkins

Herbie is a songwriter and improviser from Leeds. Now living in Falmouth, his songwriting draws on both the city’s vivid pulse, and the deep, darkly mythical Cornish landscape; combining imperfect, incendiary improvisation, with intricate arrangements.

“Herbie is one of the most creative artists I’ve ever met,” says James Mainwaring (The Exu, Roller Trio), director of Lamplight Social Records. “There’s a pure, natural fluidity to his creativity that feels totally free and uncompromised. His work is incredibly raw”.

Drawing inspiration from found-sound collage, experimental composition, and flaming folk ballads - Herbie shines with unique imagination, creating an evocative, handcrafted music, deftly shaped by collaboration with the likes of Matthew Bourne (Night Ports, Keeley Forsyth) and Chris Sharkey (Trio VD, LIMA, Roller Trio) - some of the UK’s most distinctive musicians!

In live performance, Herbie incorporates guest musicians and Butch Morris-style Conduction, allowing for structured songs to dissolve into real-time composition.
