Nervous system ecology: A 4-week breathwork course

Nervous system ecology

A four-week breathwork course

Weekly on Mondays · 16 February - 9 March · 6 - 8pm

Our nervous system shapes how we meet the world. Its state creates our perception and experience. When we feel safe and regulated, our capacity to connect - with ourselves, with others, the more-than-human, expands.

Nervous system work is not about achieving perpetual calm. Rather, it is about building capacity: the ability to move flexibly between states of activation and rest, to stay present through discomfort, to feel life more fully across its wide spectrum, and to return to safety and coherence when needed.

The nervous system is predictive - continuously shaping our responses based on past models. These patterns are reflected in the breath. We learn what’s safe to feel, yet live in a culture that can be chronically dysregulating, which often shows up as a shallow, chest-based, or held breath - unconsciously signalling danger to our system.

When survival responses are repeatedly activated we can lose touch with our fundamentally relational nature, which the breath so beautifully embodies and reflects.

Breath is a unique entry point into the nervous system: an autonomic process that is also available to conscious control, it forms a bridge, allowing us to influence internal systems and actively shift our state.

Through attention to breathing patterns, awareness gives rise to agency.

The intention for this course is to offer a practice space to deepen relationship with the breath as an inner resource, and to begin developing new baselines for the nervous system through regulation and capacity building.

We'll explore the numinous qualities of the breath, and deepen awareness of the body as a living ecology nested in wider ecologies and nervous systems, always co-regulating.

Across the four weeks, we will explore:

  • Breath awareness - sensory connection with the breath cycle as an anchor for embodied presence

  • Interoception - the capacity to perceive and track inner sensations, supporting emotional awareness and meaning-making

  • Exteroception - cultivating sensitivity and orientation to the external environment

  • Downregulation practices - using the breath to consciously support rest, repair, and safety

  • Upregulation practices - relating to the body as an energy system; working with arousal, charge, and vitality

  • Nervous system frameworks - including polyvagal theory and the window of tolerance, mapping lived experience

  • Co-regulation with the more-than-human - exploring how land, water, rhythm, sound, animal, support nervous system health

Each week will include guided breath practices, space for personal and group reflection, and of course, tea!

Tickets offered on a sliding scale based on income.

  • Supported rate: £40 (£10 per session)

  • Standard rate: £60 (£15 per session)

  • Supporter rate: £80 (£20 per session)

Facilitator
