Queer ecologies
with Rose Pugh and Cory Wilson

Through all things, we are connected. Ecology follows the tangled webs that weave through the natural world — but for many, our own worlds, our very ways of being, may be deemed ‘unnatural’ by those around us. And yet, nature itself is far queerer than we may have been led to believe, rejecting the monogamous, reprocentric, and stultifying binary narratives of the classroom and textbook.
Join us for an evening of academic rebellion and contemplation, exploring the so-called ‘natural unnatural’ that flourishes despite the writings of a cisheteronormative, anthropocentric system. Together, we will test the boundaries of ‘basic biology’, and question the role of omission in culture and education; we will delve into the challenges of queering ecology, of dissecting the subjective from the objective, and of blurring the lines between science and society.
Most crucially, however, we will ask — are some lines drawn for a reason? Is there a case for criticism?
And could we, despite best intentions, queer ecology beyond recognition and meaning?
Speakers
Cory is a zoology student with 3 years of experience studying ecology, and 27 years of experience being queer. With an eclectic background in education, theatre, biology, and art, they enjoy exploring examples within and beyond humanity that refuse to fit our ideas of normality, blending science and experience to ignite conversations and encourage alternative perspectives on society, nature, and the status quo.
Rose is a PhD student at the University of Exeter, researching how chameleon prawns change colour, with previous degrees in zoology from Bangor University. She is also a trans woman and a lesbian, with a long history of queer and feminist activism. Over the past few years, she has combined these two sides of her life, with queer ecology and ecofeminism, bringing a bit of queerness to the academic community she’s a part of, and a bit of the natural sciences to her queer community.
