The raw material of mythology: A solstice storytelling circle
with Sam Crosby of Recalling Fire

Reflective material, connective tissue, universal wisdom.
Stand in a cave. When you tilt your chin upwards, that slip-smack of stalactite moisture onto your forehead is fairytale. When you bark a stone song into the darkest part of the rock, the echo reply is myth. The waves lapping at the lip of the cave are the dare of 'once upon a time'.
There's something insane happening to us in the modern day. We are living as though we're the only ones. Ancestorless. Root-parted. We've forgotten the old stories and the names of our great-grandparents.
At best, ancient stories are half-beaten things, squirreled away into the back pockets of a meagre few or plastered on the billboards outside the nearest fast-food joint.
But ancient stories are not high fantasy. They're nothing to do with opinion or advert or politic. They're not abstracts. They're real, proper things. Material for the everyday. Raw minerals, gossiped and rumoured from that generation to the other, shaking their Disney-fied, Marvel-ed chains, barking at the high-art people to just let me be free and on the street for the good of mundanity and modernity.
All that to say - if you have been looking for story-place and story-people, come and join this winter solstice evening of myth in its raw form. Sam Crosby of Recalling Fire is coming to The Convivial for a night of sprawling story, food, community around the proverbial fire.
They say bear doesn't hibernate because winter comes, but rather that winter comes because bear hibernates. Time for us to get together and dare ourselves to invite the old stuff.
