The gods of the waterways: Remembering the eel

How might a reimagining and remembering of our relationship to the European Eel foster a remembering of our role in the world as guardians of the forgotten ones?

Although an unlikely creature to be slightly obsessed with, our speaker this evening - storyteller, researcher and eel enthusiast, Hannah Moody - will take us through the meandering migrations and mysterious lives of the European Eel...

Once so numerous that our rivers ran black with migrating eels in the springtime, our population has declined by up to 99% and they are now considered critically endangered.

Considered gods of the waterways in other cultures, this talk will explore Britain's relationship with this fish, and how, essentially, it has slipped out of our memory.

Through a guided meditation, we will be encouraged to embody the epic migration and transformation of this remarkable creature, and liken it to our own inner changes.

How can caring for this keystone species help us care for our rivers as entire beings? And is there a chance we can rekindle our care for the eel before it’s too late?

Speaker

Storyteller, researcher and eel enthusiast, Hannah Moody, has been following a thread of adventure from the UK, to Aotearoa New Zealand, to India, and back again. Currently studying the presence of the European Eel in Cornwall for her Masters thesis, her interest goes beyond science into storytelling, poetics and remembering ancient relationships to the land around us.
